In this episode we will look at some of the myths that open source communities have about themselves in the face of declining interest and engagement. It is a deep dive based on three sources:
- The “well known businesses that use Joomla” scam
- Why there are fewer free extensions available for Joomla; and
- Is the writing on the wall for Joomla in 2025?
Episode overview
Based on three articles written by Michael Russell we offer a critical assessment of the Joomla content management system, highlighting its significant decline in market share and relevance. The author argues that the content management system is inherently solid but that there is a deep concern regarding the shrinking ecosystem and volunteers to maintain the project’s activities and future goals. Furthermore, the sources explain why independent developers are moving away from free software, citing a lack of user appreciation and the high personal costs of maintenance. From a marketing perspective, it’s important for a community to remain optimistic in spite of the turbulent headwinds it will encounter; however, unless the community reflects upon itself—are its twenty year-old foundations still realistic today?—the community is in danger of facing its own extinction. It is the existential question of adapt or die. Ultimately, the writer questions the long-term viability of the project as it faces a niche future dominated by hobbyists as opposed to dedicated professionals.
