How do you create a landing page with a password was created by sozzled

Someone asked a question on the Joomla forum today. The question was

I want to create an intranet such that, when one opens the website, the first thing is to enter his/her login details. How do I achieve this?

I answered this by creating a demonstration website using J! 3.9.27 and produced an animation of the demo.
